Cara's Kitchen: Lazy Wine Lover's Paradise

January 18, 2014  •  Leave a Comment

As the inaugural Cara’s Kitchen post, I thought it fitting to feature the 2 most used gadgets in my kitchen:  Sharper Image Bottle Chiller & Waring Bottle Opener.   Two of the most significant inventions of modern times, right up there with iPhones and Nutella.  A side note- I hate when people say sliced bread is such a fantastic invention.  Really?  Slicing a loaf of belly-fattening carbohydrates beats out seat belts or chap stick or internet?

Back on topic.

The Sharper Image Bottle Chiller is ah-maz-ing.  Small enough to inconspicuously store on the counter, this gadget is the perfect addition to kitchens of all underprivileged wine lovers (you know… those of us without a wine cellar or wine fridge).  How it works-  You just put in a bottle (corked or not, no matter), reaffix the lid, and select the type of wine on the screen.  You can choose either a specific grape or broader category, and this nifty thing is smart enough to know the proper serving temperature for your wine.  After you make the selection, wait about 15 minutes and it dings to let you know your wine is at the perfect temperature!

The Waring Bottle Opener has literally saved my life on multiple occasions.  (Don’t you love when people use “literally” to mean “figuratively”???) Before getting this device, all too often, I had to pour wine through a coffee filter to catch all the cork I broke off in trying to open it with a regular old corkscrew.  But alas, this is no longer a problem! How it works-  Use the handy dandy foil cutter to remove the foil, then simply stick the opener over your bottle and push the down arrow until the cork is out, perfectly in one piece.  Then, push the up arrow until the opener releases the cork for your next Pinterest project or decorative bowl of used stinky wine corks.  Don’t worry, I have one too.

Recipe

This is my world famous recipe for Happy Cara … Super fast and easy, this is the perfect weeknight dinner option for the single ladies out there.   I would strongly recommend getting in your evening run before dinner for this one.  It can sit a little heavy in your belly sometimes.

Ingredients:  1.5 bottles Red Wine

Chill bottles to 64◦F by placing in Sharper Image Bottle Chiller.  Select “Red Wine” setting and wait approximately 15 minutes.  When beeper goes off, open perfectly-chilled bottles using the electronic bottle opener.  Save cork for later Pinterest project.  Serve glass half full.  No one likes a pessimist.

Serves:  1

Photography

Still Life Photography is typically categorized as an art in lighting techniques and creating photos rather than taking them, meaning you are able to set the photo up, add props, manipulate light, and control many factors that other types of photography don't allow.  But, with that control, you then must create the art and tell a story with your depiction of the inanimate objects.  It's a great opportunity to practice your composition.  The Rule of Thirds is the most elementary of composition techniques and will be investigated in a coming Snap!torial.

Happy Shooting !
