Where I Went Wednesday: Mon Ami Gabi for Restaurant Week

Fatty likes to eat.

A lot.

So, I’m beyond excited to be reporting on Chicago’s Restaurant Week, which incidentally is 2 weeks long.   The celebration of all things delicious comes at a particularly inopportune time for this fatty since I’m 17 days out from a Mexico vacation.  But come on.  I’m not passing up 3 courses for 33 bucks at a restaurant that draws “oooh!”  and “yummm!”  from everyone when I mention my Restaurant Week plans.    I’ll just apologize in advance to those who have to see me jiggle in a swimsuit.  And promise to wear a cover up.

Though I am a lover of food, I’m no foodie.  To be honest, I’m probably more excited about a bowl of Grape Nuts in sweats in front of the TV for dinner than a night out at a fancy restaurant, fighting the bitter cold, dressed in real clothes, wearing a bra.  (And it’s a wonder I’m still single!)  But, a night out with 3 lovely friends and the promise of steak were enough to lure the ladies into boob jail.

Mon Ami Gabi is a delightful French bistro located across from Lincoln Park on Lincoln Park West and Belden Ave.    Normally, this would be a beautiful view, but this God forsaken winter has dumped 62 inches of snow.  Along Lincoln Park West, I see the tops of 2 cars poking out of the snow, the rest of the cars encompassed by massive snow drifts.   For a brief moment, I suspected an annoyed snow plow driver’s malicious intentions for the cars blocking his path, but it’s quite clear this road hasn’t been plowed since 2010.  Once warm inside, we were quickly seated and I moved on to more important thoughts.  Wine by the glass or the bottle?

The Restaurant Week menu featured 3 courses. For me, it was cream of cauliflower soup to start, steak frites for the main dish, and a trio of dessert tasters to finish it off.  Double bonus- the steak was giant, enough for dinner the next night too!  MMMmmmm.  The food was, as expected, phenomenal (as well as phenomenally fattening).  A cheat that was undeserved but well worth it.  I'm pretty sure that the calories don't count when they're French.

Photography

Sorry folks, but there are some places where it just isn’t appropriate to take photos.  The dinner table is one of them.  In the dim lit restaurant, I would have disturbed all the guests with a flash, and taking a photo in that light without a flash would have been useless.  Sometimes, it’s manners before photos!

So in this disappointing photography blog without a single picture, let’s review the general rules of photography etiquette:

  • Be aware of your surroundings- make sure you’re photo op isn’t inconveniencing or disturbing other people.  This goes for flash, group poses that take up the sidewalk, and anything else where you mistakenly think you're the center of the universe.  Just be polite and aware of the people around you
  • Be respectful of house rules-  Some venues have rules about IF and HOW you are allowed to take photos.  These rules are there for a reason.  You’re not cool for breaking them.  You’re a jerk.
  • Don’t obstruct someone else’s view to get your shot
  • Always, always, always, always be safe!  There’s no photo worth your safety, or the safety of your subject.  Remember this in the posing of your subjects and in the positions you put yourself in to find that cool angle!

Happy Shooting!
